4/17/25: Short diary entry tonight. To the good, I’m done traveling for the next two weeks. To the bad, things are backed up now and I’m trying to get out from under them. As a result, no writing got done today, and I haven’t written since Monday. : /
Nevertheless, I’m fired up about writing, I should say, revising, tomorrow. I’m sure I’ll get some writing time in. What will I do during that time?
I combined scenes 50, 51, and 52 into one chapter. As my outline states:
#50 – Kelsey tells parents that Zeke attempted to rape her New Year’s Eve. We meet Officer LaRue, who is not as bumbling as he had been in the first draft.
#51—Mrs. Gallagher calls Kelsey out in the hall. She tells Kelsey that she received a call from Dr. Rivers. Kelsey asks what the call was about. Gallagher won’t say. But she does say that she’s behind on money and bills, and she can’t do without the income from this job. Gallagher can’t say anything more—about anything. Kelsey senses that the atmosphere is changing.
#52—Dr. Rivers invites Kelsey to his office. His tone is very different from what it was in Act2A. He again suggests Kelsey might be better off if she quits as editor. Kelsey won’t. Rivers has only one article he’d like Kelsey to write: cover the Headmistress’s presentation to the AP social studies class. She will talk about the pros and cons of private school education.
I want the chapter to end with a bang, so Kelsey and Rivers will have to fight. I’m not sure how to pull that off, because I still want Rivers to seem like a nice guy, very accommodating. Kelsey will have to get tough with him. Somewhere during their confrontation, it will dawn on Rivers that Kelsey can’t be intimidated into quitting as editor, and that he will have to get rid of her some other way. She knows too much.
